In Zen it is said that Awakening happens by accident,
but deep practice makes us accident prone.
This invitation is a seed that will find fertile ground in those who are ready to create conditions of No Escape within the self structure; to engage in what has been called sadhana in the ancient traditions.
There are many approaches to sadhana but all that follow the perennial wisdom will have similar features, even though the practices and cultures in which they arise may differ. Whether it is the Noble eight-fold Path of Buddhism or the eight limbs of yoga, or the ancient Taoist teachings. In the yogic tradition Patanjali called this practice samyama; the practice of the final three limbs in the eight-part yoga system. The practice of dharana, dhyana and samadhi.
At the “I Am” Retreat we begin by using techniques that cultivate concentration and attention and then move to Inner surrender and meditative absorption. We move from doing to non-doing and finally to samadhi; the unfathomable doing not doing… the dropping off of mind and body…. the dropping away of individual and world…. or the dropping away of all duality. The wisdom of No Escape is not a technique, practice or more doing for the conditioned self, but it is a stripping away of Illusion.
At the beginning of the 7-Day online Retreat we will offer some preliminary practices to stabilize the conditioned mind but we will eventually let go of all doing… all manipulation and control of the Mind as we go deeper into Being.
The online “I Am” Retreat involves going beyond our comfort zone… letting go of comfort and discomfort and entering into The Cloud of Unknowing… entering into a beginner’s mind. It is in this Stillness of the humbled mind that one is more likely to awaken. During this intensive you will enter into Stillness with people from around the world who are drawn to the path of Awakening. This meditation and self- inquiry intensive allows you to create conditions within your own home which allow you to come to Stillness both externally as you shut out all distractions, and internally as the Mind settles.
The online “I Am” Retreat is based on the Retreats at the Samadhi Center which have been evolving for many years, and I’ve put together all my favorite techniques and practices that have helped me on my own path… what I consider to be the best tools on the planet for awakening. The Retreat will include guided and silent meditation periods each day, live and recorded daily daily teachings, a daily Q&A where I’ll be present to answer your questions, and address whatever is coming up in your practice, such as the hindrances that we face in meditation.
We’ll be doing self-inquiry dyads every evening. You will work with partners using the most powerful and effective self-inquiry technique that we know of. There will be daily sound healing and teachings from various traditions and there will be a guided breath session for releasing deep samskaras… energy that’s been caught in unconscious patterns. In the evening there will be Yoga Nidra which is a guided meditation to take you consciously into the Sleep Cycle.
In these retreats we’re putting into place conditions of No Escape for the egoic mind.
Continuous, unbroken, single-pointed practice is the key to Samadhi. Participants are encouraged to withdraw from all mental activities for the duration of the retreat such as reading, watching, TV, computers, phones or other devices, and to turn continuously towards the Self.
The intention is to have a direct experience of your true nature, unmediated by the conditioned self. Wherever you are in your practice whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been on the path for a while we’re here to support you. Although everyone’s journey is unique and individual, we will be going through this process together.
