Daniel J. Schmidt founded the not for profit Awaken the World Initiative in 2012 and Tanya Mahar joined the team in 2016. Together they create films, run the Samadhi Meditation Center in Canada, and engage in other projects that support the ATW Initiative. They believe that through the sharing of our own inner journeys, it is possible to inspire and support others on their path.
The Samadhi Center was founded by Daniel Schmidt as an outer reflection of his inner world. His own inner guidance led him to create the Center and a space for mediators to gather and awaken to their true nature.
Daniel has been practicing meditation and self-inquiry for over 20 years and has been teaching meditation for 10 years, and draws on many different traditions in his teachings. Daniel is the creator of award winning film “Inner Worlds Outer Worlds” as well as the ongoing “Samadhi” series. As well he released a series of guided meditations and teachings as a practical guide to realizing Samadhi. His approach combines self-inquiry with traditional forms meditation so that participants have the opportunity to simultaneously realize their transcendent nature, and to purify themselves of conditioned patterns. The pathless path is to realize an ever-deepening development process within the self-structure, and to simultaneously realize the emptiness of the self-structure. Samadhi is when the world that is constantly changing merges or unites with the changeless. Checkout some of his articles on meditations and awakening at the AwakenTheWorld.com.
Tanya has explored both insight meditation and nondual teachings since the mid-90’s and loves sharing both approaches to not only help us skillfully navigate the experiences of life, but to also realize our true nature beyond all experience. She’s been sharing her enthusiasm for practice since 2011, leading classes, workshops and courses in a variety of spaces in the community, on-line and at the Samadhi Center in Ontario. Introduced to (and impressed by) Shinzen Young’s teachings in 2016, she completed L2 Coach certification in his Unified Mindfulness system in 2018.
An integral part of Awaken the World since 2016, Tanya offers a holistic approach to practice and support for our wonderful community of meditators, and also works with Dan to co-create the Samadhi film series and other projects that serve the awakening of humanity.
At the age of 15, the book Sidharta, by Herman Hesse, marked the beginning of Alex’s spiritual quest. During those years, the teachings of Jung, Krishnamurti, Huxley as well as anteogenous and chemical experimentation briefly revealed powerful periods of communion with the whole, which marked his life forever. Immigrating to the States at the age of 20, studies, jobs, family obligations, and a digital imaging career unfortunately veiled his spiritual path for years. Towards the turn of the century, a conscious decision to simplify life and make his work activities independent, Alex refocused his interest in exploring the nature of reality and being. A revelation about the coherence between quantum physics and spiritual teachings fostered a resurgence of his inner quest, gaining deep understanding and insight through the consistent, interdisciplinary and powerful presentations of Dan’s work. Today Alex is profoundly grateful to be part of the ATW initiative, helping Tanya and Dan manage development of online resources, communications and translation projects.
